THE MANSURS OF THE UNITED STATES
AS part of our Mansur family celebration, we have prepared
a summary geneology which tracks the ancestors of our families to the earliest point of immigration to this country. The following information regarding the first eight generations is copied from The House of Mansur, a book published in 1927 by Mary Rebecca Ellis, a Mansur herself. It is our hope that knowing a bit about our lineage, the names, the places they lived, the chronology of dates, will provide each of us with a better sense of roots.
The name "Mansur" is probably of Norman origin, although
we are able to trace our ancestry only to early New England and barely to England itself.
"It is probable the Mansurs in this country came from Ipswich, England", according to Ms. Ellis. The book does include one account of oral history which indicated that some Mansurs lived in Jersey, an island owned by England near the French coast, and that "Mansur being French".
The earliest immigrant known is (1) Robert, of Charleston, Massachusetts, in 1670. A son, (2) John, was born in 1671. He and his second wife, Elizabeth Henshaw, had a daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1703 and a son, (3) John, born in 1705. John married Hannah Lovejoy in Andover (Mass.) in 1732. Their children were John, born in 1734, (4) William, born in 1737, Elizabeth, born in 1740, James, born in 1744 and Samuel, born in 1745. William (born in 1737 in Dracut, Mass.) married Isabel Harvey (whose parents were from Ireland) in 1762. They moved to Temple, New Hampshire that same year. They had ten children: William, (5) John, Elizabeth. Joseph, Ezra, Stephen, Aaron, Jeremy, Hannah. and Harvey. John, born 1765, married Mary Polly Kimball in 1794. They lived in Andover, Vermont, and had eight children: John, Polly, William, Harvey, Nancy, (6) George Hawkins, Achsah, and Franklin.
George Hawkins was born at Andover in 1805. He married
Mary Polly Smith, born in 1807, at Andover in 1829.
They moved to Neenah in 1843. Their children were Jefferson, Eliza Jane, Nancy Relief, George, (7) Esther, Granville and (7)Sidney.
Esther, born in 1843 at Kaukauna married Benjamin Rogers, born in 1830, in 1865.
Sidney, born in 1849 at Neenah, married Sabrina Pope in 1871.
Esther Roger's children (eighth generation) were Frank,
b. 10-7-1866; Edward, b. 8-16-1868, d. 12-23-1921; Denver, b. 11-21-1870; Isaac, b. 2-12-1873; Ida May, b. 11-6-1876; Lawrence, b. 10-3-1878. Esther died 3-4-1907 at Tully, N.Y. Her children were born at Neenah and are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
